WEHI, Melbourne, Australia

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) is Australia's oldest medical research institute, and celebrated its centenary in 2015.  For 100 years we have been making discoveries for humanity, improving the health of people in Australia and around the world.

An opportunity exists for a talented postdoctoral scientist (Research Officer) to join WEHI’s Bioinformatics Division, one of the largest bioinformatics research groups in Australia.

The position will be in the research laboratory of Professor Gordon Smyth. The laboratory develops statistical methodology and computational algorithms for analysing genomic data, with a view to understanding gene expression patterns and gene regulatory mechanisms. The laboratory actively collaborates with biological scientists at the institute and elsewhere on problems relating to stem cells, cancer and immunological disorders. The laboratory routinely analyses data from RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Hi-C, DNA-seq and other technologies.

The appointee will work on collaborative projects as prioritised by the Laboratory Head and will have the opportunity to develop novel statistical bioinformatic methods as appropriate for these projects. The appointee will work particularly on RNA-seq analysis, evolution and cross-species expression data, breast cancer, blood disorders and stem cells in collaborations with the Molecular Medicine and Stem Cells & Cancer Divisions.

This position would suit a PhD graduate in a relevant discipline such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, computational biology or genetics. The appointee will have strong programming and data analysis skills. Prior experience in genomic research is not essential, but the applicant must be highly motivated to work on problems in medical biology.

The position will be for 2 years in the first instance. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience. Up to 17% superannuation and attractive salary packaging options are available.

A position description including key selection criteria is available at http://bioinf.wehi.edu.au/folders/gordon/SmythLabOct16_RO_PD.pdf
