Overview: The Microarray Informatics group at the EBI is looking for a software engineer to develop a comprehensive, extensible system for creating web-interfaces and web-services for Bioconductor packages, within the context of the ArrayExpress database of public microarray data. Job description: The Software Engineer will participate in the design and implementation of a framework for providing a web-based front-end to core Bioconductor packages, adding the developed modules to a general online data analysis and visualisation platform being developed in the group and integrating this functionality with the public microarray data repository and warehouse ArrayExpress. The successful candidate will be part of the Data Access team within the Microarray Informatics Group. The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory provides cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics. Qualifications and experience: The ideal candidate will have an avid interest in software engineering and design as well as education and experience in computer science/mathematics/bioinformatics/IT. Some bioinformatics experience would be advantageous, especially in the area of microarray data analysis, experience in development of software/ application interfaces for scientists would be beneficial, and skills in GUI design are a plus. Ability to work in a small team, to take initiative as necessary, to think independently and creatively, and to deliver results in a timely manner are necessary. An enthusiasm for solving challenging problems and good communication & interpersonal skills are required. ? 2+ years Java web programming experience (JSP, JSF, JavaBeans, J2EE/ Java EE5) is required and knowledge of Perl programming language is a plus. ? Experience working with R/Bioconductor or S-PLUS/MATLAB/similar tools would be advantageous and familiarity with XML and related web technologies (XSLT, XQuery, SOAP/REST Web Services, etc.) beneficial. ? Experience with web application servers/servlet containers (jBoss, Tomcat, GlassFish/Sun Application Server) is advantageous. This project is funded by the BBSRC and forms part of the collaboration of Alvis Brazma's and Wolfgang Huber's groups at the EBI.
