Loess and Lowess

In quite a few of the Bioconductor packages, the terms Loess and Lowess appear to be interchangeable. Are they talking about the same thing? Thanks Mick

No, they are related but not the same thing. Loess is sort of a next-generation version of lowess. See ?loess and ?lowess Jim James W. james is right but when they appear as "english language" in the statistical literature they sometimes mean the same thing: local regression smoothing in general.
