Hi, Here is an update of information on the BioConductor Developer Workshop, to be held in Lausanne, Switzerland on 24-25 April 2008. If you have already registered, you should receive an email with this information, please let me know if you did not get it. Best regards, Darlene -------------------------------------------------------------------- BioConductor Developer Workshop 2008 ------------------------------------ 24 - 25 April 2008, Lausanne, Switzerland. This meeting is aimed at active developers as well as prospective developers interested in improving package writing skills and contributing to the BioConductor project. Details ------- The meeting will take place at the University of Lausanne, in room Amphimax 414 (Quartier Sorge), with English as the working language. The closest metro stop is Unil-Sorge (NOT Unil-Dorigny). Detailed directions to the University (in English) are available at http://www.unil.ch/acces/page36432_en.html Travel and registration ----------------------- The meeting will start on the morning of Thursday 24 April, so you should plan to arrive by the evening before. The closest airport is in Geneva. Accommodation information is provided below. It will be helpful for scheduling if you indicate topics of interest, including additional suggestions if you don't see them listed here. Programme topics ---------------- * Exploitation of existing libraries I: ImageMagick for image processing and analysis - Wolfgang Huber * Exploitation of existing libraries II: String matching for fext generation sequencing data - Martin Morgan * Exploitation of existing libraries III: Affymetrix File Parsing SDK - Henrik Bengtsson/Kasper Daniel Hansen * Working with large datasets I: Affymetrix SNP array 6.0 - Benilton Carvalho * Working with large datasets II: Exon arrays - Crispin Miller * Working with large datasets III: - Henrik Bengtsson (TBC) * Parallel processing in R - Richard Pearson * Database interactions are intrinsically useful, and provide a strategy for dealing with some types of large data: the annaffy package and its use of SQLite database functionality - Sean Davis * Object relational managers and R - Sean Davis * Plans for a new tool to replace AnnBuilder - Martin Morgan * org.species and homology annotation packages as infrastructure for package developers - James McDonald * Accessing web-based resources, Biomart and XML - Steffen Durinck (TBC) * R Webservices - Misha Kapushesky, Karim Chine * Representation and data structures for new (non-microarray) data I - Vince Carey, Martin Morgan * Representation and data structures for new (non-microarray) data II: cell-based assays and the cellHTS2 package - Wolfgang Huber Flashlight Session ------------------ Each attendee (especially those not speaking above) is encouraged to give a 5-10min (<=3 slides) intro to (one of) the packages they're working on. Lodging ------- The University can obtain a discount rate from some of the local hotels: Hotel des Voyageurs (http://www.holidaycityeurope.com/comfort- lausanne/), approx 127.50CHF, is in downtown Lausanne on a pedestrian street Hotel du Parc (http://www.leparc.ch/), approx 145 CHF, is in Ecublens a few metro stops from the University. To obtain the discount we must book the room for you. If you want to book one of these, then please send an email as soon as possible to Muriel.Metrailler AT unil DOT ch, letting her know which hotel you prefer, what days you need and how many in the room (single or double). If booking a double room, only 1 email with both names is necessary. Getting to Lausanne ------------------- The closest airport is in Geneva. There is a train station at the airport (Geneva Airport, NOT Geneva), with 3-5 trains per hour to Renens VD and Lausanne. You can plan your train journey (in English) at http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm You can also change the language to German, French or Italian. The currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF), equivalent to approximately 0.90 US dollar, 0.60 Euro, or 0.45 British pounds sterling. Exchanging money is very easy in Switzerland, you can change money at major train stations (including at the airport) and banks, or at cash machines using debit or credit cards. About Lausanne -------------- Lausanne, the capital of the Swiss canton Vaud, is a hilly city located on the shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. It is the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, and home to several museums, parks and other attractions.
