I find Google's site search the most effective way to search mail archives. I generally use the incantation (Example for R): site:r-project.org search terms here to search the entire site, including email. To make this easier, and to share this trick with others, I've often wanted to have a search box on bioconductor.org and r-project.org. So, here's a simple form does the trick for r-project.org:
Search terms:
http://www.google.com/search" method="get">
The obvious change makes it work for bioconductor. -Greg > -----Original Message----- > From: Martin Maechler [mailto:maechler@stat.math.ethz.ch] > Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2003 4:33 AM > To: Jeff Gentry > Cc: ESS-core@stat.math.ethz.ch; R-core@stat.math.ethz.ch; Bioconductor > (E-mail) > Subject: [BioC] Re: Better mailing list archives {was "Searching BioC > .."} > > > >>>>> "JeffG" == Jeff Gentry <jgentry@jimmy.harvard.edu> > >>>>> on Wed, 1 Oct 2003 01:25:22 -0400 (EDT) writes: > > >> Is there a search facility for the past BioConductor > mails similar to > >> R's search engine (eg http://www.google.com/u/newcastlemaths) ? > > JeffG> Nope. > > JeffG> If someone wants to provide said capability, it would > JeffG> be awfully nice of them :) > > yes, in any case/ > > JeffG> Until then we have the archive, but as you noted > there is no search > JeffG> capability built in. > > As mailing list site manager, I have recently e-talked with > some mailman developers about other problems with the simple > pipermail archiving {which is builtin default for mailman lists}. > > Some then mentioned the possibility of using MHonARC instead of > pipermail.
