A Handbook of Aromatic and Essential Oil Plants
The diffusing fragrance and flavour of plants have been utilized world
over for herbal medicines, pharmaceuticals, perfumery, aromatherapy
and culinary purposes. The demand for plant based therapeutics has
increased immensely in both developing and developed countries due to
growing recognition that they are natural products, being nonnarcotic,
having no side-effects and easily available at affordable prices since
some of the aromatic plant species have the unique capability to grow
under low tility, rainfed conditions and salinity effected soils with
low inputs, therefore scientific cultivation of aromatic plants can
became an important tool for socioeconomic development of rural masses
and it can also provide green health alternatives in the form of eco-
friendly products.
Plants produce a range of bioactive compounds and are sources of large
number of useful chemicals like alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids,
hormones, phenols, tennins and many other compounds. Essential oils
obtained from aromatic plants by distillation expression or extraction
with suitable organic solvents represents a complex mixture of several
compounds. A vast majority of essential oils, however are constituted
by mixtures of volatile monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes.
Among the four lakh plant species in the world, essential oils are
found in a small number of only about 2000 species belonging to 60
families. Depending upon the botanical species, the volatile oils in
these plants are stored and preserved in roots, leaves, seeds, bark,
fruits, flowers and stem which may be emitting characteristic odour in
their surroundings. The odour associated with the plant parts, has
given rise to the age old perfumery traditions and over the years, the
essential oils extracted from these plants have become precious and
indispensable ingredients of fragrance, pharmaceuticals and flavour.
These plant products are greatly utilized in confectionary, food,
condiments, dental creams, mouth washes, soaps etc.
The arrangement of the chapters is aimed to describe the fundamental
and basic issues of aromatic and essential plants. The book provides
information on various aspects of Aromatic and Essential plants,
aromatherapy, evaluation of new aromatic plants, chemistry and
phytochemistry of essential oils and aroma, essential oils, various
preparations from medicinal aromatic plants, extraction technologies
for medicinal aromatic plants in First Section. The Second Section of
the book includes the complete description of individual plant with
its botanical status, uses, chemistry, cultivation, extraction
methods, etc. The Third Section of the book presents the short
description of about 307 plants in the form of Directory.

Medicinal Herbs with their Formulations
Volume 1 & 2
This book on Medicinal Herbs has been compiled and written mainly for
medical, pharmaceutical and research scientists who are today or may
in future to be concerned with the identity, efficasy and safety of
Indian Medicinal Plants as well as of other countries. This book
describes and illustrates more than 500 species of the most important
medicinal plants and provides information on their habitats and
growing conditions. The authors have tried to give as much as possible
information including the latest scientific findings. The toxicities
of some medicinal plants and the need for their careful handling are
emphasized throughout the book. All readers will find something of
value and also this book may enkindle serious interest in therapeutic
use and clinical research on medicinal plants. This book is not a
uniform or systematic encyclopedia of medicinal plants but what has
been attempted here is to provide a focus on medicinal plants limiting
the number of indications and formulations in a pragmatic manner to
enlist a global interest in India's rich flora with a therapeutic
potential of unprecedented magnitude.
In this book, by using the avenues of documented ayurvedic experience
and informed dialogue on modem data as well as traditional literature,
author want to emphasise that this work has historical and
contemporary validity that will advance as the therapeutic use of the
single plant and their formulation grows worldwide. Human history has
shown that multiple options do exist for safeguarding health. To avoid
any mistakes in identification any differences between the plants and
other similar species have been highlighted.

Seed Album of Some Medicinal Plants of India
The book "Seed Album of Some Medicinal Plants of India" is a novel
experiment-a deviation from the normal trend of focusing the leaves
and flowers of a plant. The book not only depicts the morphological
diversity and beauty of seeds but also assists in an instant
identification of the plants through attractive photographs of
seeds/fruits. The physiological aspects such as seed dormancy,
germination, viability and propagation methods have also been given
due consideration for facilitating the cultivation which is a need of
the hour in light of increasing awareness for and demand of medicinal
plants so as to prevent their exhaustion from the nature and
ultimately prevent their extinction. The genuineness of the drug and
its sustained supply are also ensured. The medicinal uses of the
plants are also described in this book. The plants are integral part
of the human life and the seed is the most vital entity of the life
cycle of a plant which has been given due importance in the present
book.
