JOB SUMMARY:
This post forms part of the Molecular Epidemiology Team within The
Institute of Cancer Research, Division of Genetics and Epidemiology.
The team carries out research on causes of cancer through the use
exposure assessment and biomarkers in epidemiological studies. Major
objectives include identification of risk factors for specific tumor
types through the molecular characterization of tumors, study of
inherited susceptibility to cancer, and characterization and use of
novel biomarkers of risk. This work is aimed at provide insights into
biological mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and improving risk assessment
tools to facilitated targeted prevention and screening strategies.
Data resources include the Breakthrough Generations Study, a national
epidemiological cohort study of the causes of cancer, involving over
110,000 women in the UK, case-control studies and clinical trials. In
addition, the team is involved in large-scale projects as part of
international collaborations. The post holder will work closely with
other members of the team and will be primarily responsible for
statistical analysis of biomarker data derived from a range of assays
and technologies, including development and application of novel
analytical tools. The team is based at the Sutton site of The
Institute of Cancer Research, 15 Cotswold Rd, Belmont, Sutton, Surrey
SM2 5NG.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
The post holder will be expected to work on the following, as
required:
* To identify, develop and implement suitable tools and analytical
techniques for the analysis of data, including large datasets derived
from microarray and sequencing technologies.
* To conduct statistical analyses.
* To work on the development and definition of study questions with
investigators. This will often include a review of the available
literature
and analysis of data from other sources.
* To prepare scientific papers for conference presentation and
publication.
* To contribute to the development of research protocols, particularly
with reference to statistical considerations of sample size and
analysis strategy.
