Senior Bioinformatician, Children´s Cancer Research Institute Vienna
The Children´s Cancer Research Institute science.ccri.at) announces recruitment for the position of a senior bioinformatician.

The St. Anna Kinderspital (StA) and the Children´s Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) are known for providing the highest quality of childhood cancer patient care and development of new treatment strategies, respectively. We are extending our bioinformatics team and are seeking for an enthusiastic bioinformatician (postdoc level) who would like to build and advance her/his career in translational cancer genomics.
You will conduct analyses of genomics data from childhood cancers in close collaboration with molecular biologists, geneticists, pediatric oncologists and other bioinformaticians. Current projects include genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic analyses of pediatric leukemia and solid tumors on primary tumors and liquid biopsies), and the analysis of experimental model systems. The CCRI is also involved into several large-scaled national and international research collaborations.
The position offers significant opportunities for independent and applied research of novel bioinformatics methodologies related to the CCRI research programs. The interdisciplinary and translational focus of CCRI combined with its strong national and international partnerships provides an active and rich research environment.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead bioinformatics design and analyses of transcriptomics datasets mainly from RNA sequencing and their integration with other data sources and ‘omics data as required.
  • Support analyses of whole-genome sequencing and SNP array data with a focus on CNV and structural variation calling for a range of different projects, leading to interpretation of genetic variants.
  • Provide bioinformatics support for emerging research areas at the CCRI which include neo-epitope detection for immune-oncology, single-cell genomics, 3D genomics and other ‘omics.
  • Evaluate new open-source and commercial software packages for analysis, annotation and interpretation of sequencing data, and integrate with existing data analysis pipelines as required including links to bioinformatics and genomics databases, protein sequence, function, and interactions and pathway analyses to support the rapid and accurate interpretation of variants.
  • Keep abreast of methodology developments relevant to the field as appropriate for the projects to assist with translation of sequencing technology into CCRI.
  • Contribute ideas and help in designing novel cutting-edge genomics projects
  • Communicate actively with other bioinformaticians, clinical researchers, geneticists, statisticians and clinical informatics staff.
  • Supervise group-associated junior bioinformaticians.
  • Desirable: conduct own research and develop novel methodologies and algorithms for analysis, integration and interpretation of NGS data and evaluate these in close collaboration with CCRI and StA researchers; lead or contribute to grant applications.

Your Qualifications:

  • Degree or extensive track record in bioinformatics, computational biology or data analysis
  • Strong experience in applied NGS data analysis, including RNA-seq (required), WGS, WES or ChIP-seq
  • Good programming and/or scripting skills (e.g., R, Java, Python, C++, ), proficiency with Linux/Unix
  • Solid Statistics background
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivated and creatively
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) with the ability to communicate effectively at different levels of technical knowledge.
  • Ability to assess new developments in the field and apply them efficiently.
  • Strong publication record

The Institution:
The CCRI is situated in the center of Vienna, one of Europe’s most important places for medical research and life sciences and cited as the most livable city in the world. It hosts nearly 100 investigators working in the fields of pediatric leukemia, solid tumors, immunology and stem cell transplantation. Tightly associated with St. Anna Children´s hospital, the biggest center for pediatric hematology and oncology in Austria and one of the leading treatment centers for children with cancer in Europe, the CCRI performs basic, translational and clinical research. Genomics and epigenomics of pediatric cancers are areas of strategic development on its way to precision medicine. The CCRI collaborates closely with other leading national and international research institutions (in Vienna, for example, with the Medical University, the Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) and the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP)).
Applications including a supporting statement, curriculum vitae, and three references shall be addressed to Dr. Niko Popitsch, e-mail: hr(at)ccri.at no later than March 30. The supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Successful applicants will be offered a highly competitive salary, and an initial three-year contract with the perspective of extension.
