Some things may work with the old version of R, but you are likely to run into weird little errors for any package that relies on new functionality from R-2.2.0. Installing BioC will also be a pain, because you won't be able to use e.g., biocLite() to automate things. If at all possible, it is best just to get R-2.2.0 and run biocLite() to get BioC installed.
