Job Summary A position with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the University of British Columbia is open immediately for a database software developer to work with our interdisciplinary team of researchers and software developers within the Department of Molecular Oncology at BC Cancer Research, part of the Provincial Health Services Authority. We are seeking a creative, experienced, and dedicated individual to play a key role in designing, developing and maintaining our bioinformatics data storage solutions for experimental and genomics data.

The database engineer will be responsible for creating database solutions for data organization and management challenges in the department. Our team is responsible for thousands of patients worth of experimental data and terabytes of sequencing data. You will maintain current database solutions, improving and adding features independently and as requested. You will be responsible for the design and update of new and existing databases to achieve performance and usability objectives. You will research and deploy new technologies if assessed as ideal and optimal. You will work with developers to ensure proper interfacing of databases to automated analysis pipelines.

You will be on-site in the Department of Molecular Oncology at BC Cancer, working closely with software developers, students and researchers operating at the leading edge of the field of cancer genomics. Our department has recently made meaningful advances in understanding of tumour evolution and the software platforms developed in the lab will be used by world-leading scientists at BC Cancer and international collaborators to gain insight into how cancers initiate, develop and acquire resistance to treatment. Organizational Status We are a small team of software developers and scientists embedded within a larger cancer research
lab. You will working on a team of software developers and bioinformaticians to implement bioinformatics solutions for the lab. You will be responsible for designing and building data management solutions for genomic research. You will be reporting to the principle investigator or designate. You will be working closely with specialists and system administrators for optimization and hardware needs.

Work Performed - Research and design data management solutions for genomics research - Create robust metadata databases for sample tracking and query for researchers - Create robust file management systems to manage petabytes of binary data files - Communicate with researchers and developers to identify and determine software requirements - Document and teach best practices for software usage - Management of daily activities of the computational team

Supervision Received You will be supervised by the principle investigator or designate.

Supervision Given You may help advise and recommend best course of actions to other members of the lab on subjects pertaining to your field of expertise.

Consequence of Error/Judgement You will be independently responsible for the creation and maintenance of research critical software infrastructure used by the lab. You will be deciding and carrying the best course of action for unforeseen issues and problems involving software, analysis and data management.
Failure to perform will result in minor to major setback of research and operational activities.

Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
