Proposed Starting Date: As soon as possible after closing
Qualifications: M.S. degree in a field of science relevant to
biological computing required (Ph.D. preferred), preference for fields
of computer science, bioinformatics, statistics, or biotechnology.
Experience and Training: At least four years of experience with
designing, deploying and administering computational infrastructures
supporting scientific research, and at least two years of experience
with distributed and parallel solutions (clusters, grids, clouds) for
high-throughput data analysis. At least four years of experience with
the productive use of scripting (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby) and
programming (e.g. FORTRAN, C++, C#) languages.
Responsibilities: The University of Illinois Roy J. Carver
Biotechnology Center is a core user facility and this position is
associated specifically with the High-Performance Biological Computing
Program (HPCBio). The selected candidate will direct and oversee the
development of the computational infrastructure of HPCBio. The major
responsibilities include: the development of and maintenance of a
software stack serving the research needs, design and implement a
software, networking and hardware environment enabling transparent
sharing of computational resource for biological research. Prepare
funding requests or grant proposals for new purchase of additional
equipment and/or personnel for HPCBio and participation in training
with emphasis on technical and computational skills. Keep abreast of
new developments in computer technology and lead the implementation of
innovative software and hardware solutions. All HPCBio personnel are
expected to work collaboratively to optimize the delivery of services
and support to its users; the responsibilities associated with the
position include flexibility in taking on tasks related to the overall
mission of HPCBio and consistent with the applicant's qualifications.

Qualifications: MS degree in a field of science relevant to biological
computing required (PhD degree preferred). Preferred degree fields are
bioinformatics, molecular genetics, statistics, or biotechnology.
Alternative degree fields may be considered/accepted if accompanied by
equivalent experience. Experience and Training: At least two years'
experience with designing and delivering educational materials in the
field of biomedical / biological computing. At least two years'
practical experience working in a bioinformatics group, preferably
including user support duties. Training in molecular genetics and
knowledge of methodologies for analyzing genetic data.

user training and support activities of HPCBio, as well as supervise
and train academic and technical personnel. The major responsibilities
include: the development of a program of courses and workshops and
oversee the implementation of this program, identify instructors, and
promote the program campus-wide, as well as participation in some
teaching. Prepare funding requests or grant proposals for the
development of new educational activities by HPCBio. Collaborate with
faculty to promote training in bioinformatics at the undergraduate and
graduate level. Engage in outreach activities to the public at large.
All HPCBio personnel are expected to work collaboratively to optimize
the delivery of services and support to its users; the
responsibilities associated with the position include flexibility in
taking on tasks related to the overall mission of HPCBio and
consistent with the applicant's qualifications.
Type of Position: Full-time Visiting Academic Professional with
potential of becoming a permanent Academic Professional position based
upon job demands and performance. Salary is commensurate with
experience.
