Description

We are seeking a PhD student to apply leading-edge bioinformatics analysis methods to decipher the interactions of the obligate intracellular human pathogen, Chlamydia trachomatis, with its host cell. This is an exciting opportunity for a PhD candidate to work in the i3 Institute, the internationally recognised infection-focused research institute within the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, in collaboration with the world-leading Bioinformatics Group at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), Melbourne, Australia.

The scholarship is for $AUD25,849 per annum (2015 rate, indexed, Australian income tax free) over three years.

The successful applicant will work with Associate Professor Garry Myers (UTS) and Dr Alicia Oshlack (MCRI) to apply or develop statistical and computational bioinformatic methods for analyzing and integrating transcriptomic, proteomic and epigenetic data generated by a variety of cutting-edge methodologies, including host/pathogen RNA-Seq, single-infected-cell RNA-Seq, BS-Seq, mass spectrometry and ChIP-Seq.

Desirable skills and qualifications

Suitable applicants should have:

  • a First Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in statistics/biostatistics, computer science, or other fields with strong quantitative training or experience.
  • Previous experience with genome-scale data is a plus.
  • Strong programming skills in R (or similar) required.
  • A biology background would be favorably considered but is not essential.

Applicants for the scholarship must also apply to be admitted to the PhD degree at UTS.
