Aalborg University Hospital Section of Molecular Diagnostics

We are looking for a motivated bioinformatician to strengthen and expand bioinformatic work force in response to increasing needs of a molecular diagnostic group utilizing big data.

Application deadline: 19th of April 2017

Core tasks

Develop or adapt pipelines and software for analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data. Particular bioinformatic areas include (1) variant detection and classification of human genome and exome data, (2) RNA-seq, (3) DNA methylation, and (4) viral genomics. The successful candidate will also take part in the research and teaching activities.

Section of Molecular Diagnostics has many years of experience in conducting routine molecular diagnostics serving patients in The North Denmark Region. We deliver testing results and do research on rare genetic disorders, non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPT), cancer gene panels, pre-implantation genetic diagnostics (PGD), detection and genotyping of HBV, HCV, HIV and other pathogenic viruses.

We also have special research interests in progression of DNA methylation before and during liver fibrosis and dynamics of gene expressions in relation with liver fibrosis.

In bioinformatics, we make extensive use of open-source software. We build practically useful pipelines, make analytical choices of software and develop new programs if necessary. To do this, we aim to understand deeply bioinformatic algorithms, and inner working of programs. Our software are written in various programming languages, and runs on local Linux servers/clusters.

The appointment is for three years with a possibility for permanent position. The position is open from 1st June 2017 or soon hereafter for a candidate with relevant education or skills.

Qualifications Essential

  1. A PhD or Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, or Molecular Biology; and the candidate has special interests in bioinformatics
  2. Proficient in at least one of programming languages (Python, Ruby, Java, Scala, C++, C, etc.)
  3. Able to work comfortably with Linux environment
  4. Able to analyze and give recommendations to experiment design and data analysis strategy.
  5. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English/Danish and ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment

Desirable (one or more of the qualifications below)

  • Proficient in applied statistics and R
  • Prior experience working with omics data
  • Experience with NGS or Big Data algorithms
  • Able to use Git for version control
  • Strong theoretical foundation in software engineering
  • Fluent in D language
  • Track records with scientific publications or open-source software projects
  • Experience with machine learning and neural network in data analysis
  • Experience with cluster and parallel/distributed computing algorithms and infrastructure
