Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).

EMBL is seeking a highly motivated bioinformatics engineer to work in the group of Prof. Matthias Hentze. Research in the Hentze group primary focuses on novel RNA-binding proteins and the identification of their role¬ in health and disease. The group uses new next-generation sequencing and mass-spectrometry-based technologies to identify and functionally characterize RNA-binding proteins and their targets. The successful applicant will be involved in the computational analysis and interpretation of these data. (S)he will create workflows based on existing tools and further develop analysis methodologies in order to translate novel data types into biological discoveries.

The successful applicant will be part of the bioinformatics core of a research team, collaborating closely with experimentalists that produce large amounts of data. This position is tightly embedded in the overall research of the lab and will make crucial contributions to the scientific outcomes. The position provides a unique opportunity to acquire practical data science skills that are in high demand and to develop a career in cutting edge bioinformatics services and infrastructures. The position will work closely with a bioinformatics engineer, be supported by a senior bioinformatics postdoc in the lab and will be complemented by an excellent network of bioinformaticians as well as computational and scientific facilities at EMBL.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have a university degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, biophysics, computer science or related fields (MSc or PhD). An educational background or practical knowledge in the analysis of large datasets and working in Linux environments are required. Prior experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) analyses and NGS datasets is a must. Knowledge of Python (or another scripting language) and/or the statistical programming language R/Bioconductor is an advantage. A general understanding of biological questions will help to communicate with other scientists.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who are keen to contribute novel ideas, are proactive and have good problem-solving skills.
