UCLouvain is recruiting a Research Logistician in Bioinformatics

  • full-time with a permanent contract
  • for the Louvain Institute of Biomolecular Science and Technology (LIBST)
  • in Louvain-la-Neuve

Context and organization

The Research logistician in bioinformatics will be based in the Louvain Institute of Biomolecular Science and Technology (LIBST) and will be very close to the users. She/he will eventually be part of a technological platform of computational biology at the crossroads of two sectors of the university: Science and Technology Sector (SST) and Health Science Sector (SSS).

She/he will interact with the research teams of both LIBST and Earth & Life Institute (ELI) institutes using bioinformatics approaches, with the proteomics platform (MASSPROT), the genomics and bioinformatics platform (PGEN, SSS), the academics/researchers of ICTEAM/INGI (Computer Science Engineering) and with the Statistical Methodology and Computing Service (SMCS) platform.

In this context the research logisticianwill be an associate consultant of the SMCS and she/he will collaborate closely with the SMCS consultant in charge of the LIBST and ELI institutes in order to share projects, collaborate in the preparation of training for researchers, to develop common working practices and share IT tools.

The research logistician will apply for funding(alone or with principal investigators) in order to acquire computing equipment and to cover operating costs (software, use of supercomputers, mass storage...). A financial contribution to the operating costs might be requested to the users on a pro rata basis for the time spent.

Missions and main tasks

The research logistician in bioinformatics will need to have competences in several of the following topics:

  • Development of tools to analyze data on sequenced genomes;
  • Analysis of transcriptomics data;
  • Analysis of proteomics data;
  • Functional classification;
  • Phylogenetic analysis;
  • GWAS analysis;
  • Statistical validation;
  • Assistance in modeling;
  • ...

The research logistician in bioinformatics will participate in the setting up of projects, alone or in collaboration with the academics involved. She/he will guide the researchers (postdocs, PhD students, master students, visiting researchers ...), suggest solutions to project-related questions and develop the adequate bioinformatics tools.

Required qualifications and abilities:

  • PhD in Science, in Engineering Sciences or in Agronomy and Biological Engineering
  • Experience in bioinformatics emphasized by publications of manuscripts and software in the field;
  • Experience in one or more omics such as genomics, transcriptomic, proteomics/metabolomics;
  • Knowledge ofphylogenyand associated statistical techniques;
  • Documented experience in the analysis of raw data provided by new generation sequencing platforms (Illumina sequencing, RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq,...) and/or spectrometric and metabolomic platforms;
  • Expert in a scripting/programming language such as R and/or python;
  • Excellent comprehension and knowledge of scientific and technical English;
  • Good skills in organizing team work and strong capacities to work on its own;
  • Sense of leadership;
  • Good capacity to adapt and to set tools according to the needs of the researchers;
  • Excellent communicating skills and good capacities to explain techniques in more simple terms to the non-specialists.

UCLouvain is the largest university of the French speaking part of Belgium. It is located in Louvain-la-Neuve, 30 km south of Brussels. One of the most recent towns in Europe, Louvain-la-Neuve is hailed as an achievement, combining modernity with tradition, inspired by the layout of medieval university towns. The host Institute of Biomolecular Science and Technology (https://uclouvain.be/en/research-institutes/libst), which brings together more than 150 researchers working in the field of biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology and physiology. This Institute runs several technical platforms, such as biological imaging and proteomics and protein analysis by mass spectrometry.
